British Airways airline baggage rules

British Airways offers passengers different baggage options depending on the ticket type and travel class. It is important to be aware of the baggage rules to avoid additional charges or problems at the airport.

Carry-on baggage:

British Airways passengers may carry hand luggage depending on their ticket type:

  • Economy (Basic/Standard) ticket: one large piece of hand luggage (up to 56x45x25 cm, up to 23 kg) and one small personal item (e.g. a handbag or laptop) that fits under the seat.

  • Premium Economy, Business and First Class: you are allowed to take more pieces of hand luggage, depending on the class, but the dimensions and weight of each item must comply with the specified limits.

It is important that your luggage does not exceed the permitted dimensions and weight – otherwise, an additional charge may apply or you may be required to check in your luggage.

Checked baggage:

The amount of checked-in luggage depends on the ticket type:

  • Economy (Basic/Standard): 1 piece of checked baggage (up to 23 kg) is usually included in the fare.

  • Premium Economy: 2 pieces of checked baggage are permitted (23 kg each).

  • Business (Club World / Club Europe): 2–3 pieces of checked baggage are permitted (32 kg each).

  • First Class: 3 pieces of checked baggage (32 kg each) are permitted.

If your checked-in luggage exceeds the permitted weight or dimensions, additional charges may apply. We recommend checking the official British Airways website before your journey for the latest updates to baggage policies and fees.
